Allied Waste Company topped Superior’s bid for Duluth’s garbage contract. Mike Simonson reports from Superior.

Allied Waste Company topped Superior’s bid for Duluth’s garbage contract.

The Western Lake Superior Sanitary District Board this week voted to negotiate with Allied Waste instead of Superior. WLSSD Planning Manager Jack Ezell doubts Superior can win the five year contract now. “Not unless something substantial changes, we’ve checked the proposals by other providers carefully." Superior Mayor Dave Ross says the city will make a counter-offer. Even so, Ezell says waste could become a hot commodity soon with biomass and eco-industrial parks being proposed in the region. Allied Waste operates the Sarona landfill. Superior wants to have Duluth’s garbage put in its Wisconsin Point landfill. Ross says the city will make a counter-offer in hopes of landing Duluth’s garbage disposal for five years. The current contract with Allied Waste ends June 30.
